Getting Your Patio Ready For Winter

September 01, 2015

Summer is winding down and it is time to prepare your home for the colder weather.  There are a number of things to worry about for your home as winter approaches.  One of the most important but often forgotten steps is preparing your patio door.  Winter in Wisconsin means below-zero weather, mounds of snow and blustering winds.  Before the temperature drops, it is vital to get your patio door ready for winter.  Follow these simple maintenance tasks now to prevent cold drafts from getting in your home later!

Checking For Air Leaks:  Over time, exposure to light, moisture, extreme temperatures, wear, and compression will affect the ability to seal properly.  In order to find where the leaks are coming from, you should check around the edge of your patio door for drafts.  A great and inexpensive way to find those hidden leaks is by doing an “incense test”. First, close all of the doors and windows in your home, and turn off any appliances that use a live flame like furnaces and water heaters. Then, turn on the exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathrooms. This creates a negative pressure within the house. Light a stick of incense and follow the edge of the door (about 6 inches away from the wall).  When the smoke from the incense changes direction, you will know you’ve found the source of the air leak.  Once you have found the cause, you will be able to find the proper solution.

Cleaning The Track:  The track at the bottom part of your patio door accumulates dirt, dust and other grime over time.  This can make the door hard to operate.  As part of your winter preparation, it is vital to clean the track.  This step is so important it can add years to the operation of your door.  A great way to clean the track is by using a shop vac to clean any loose debris and then use a cleaning solution and toothbrush to loosen up the remaining grime.  Follow with a shop vac to clean up the remaining mess.

Investing In A Replacement: Your patio door may close and lock properly, but sometimes that is not enough to keep the cold air out.  If you rarely use your patio door during the winter months, you can install a plastic film in front of it to keep drafts out of your home!  To make sure your patio door is to the highest standards, contact the professionals at Packerland Home Improvement.  Our replacement doors perform at an incredibly high standard by improving energy efficiency, reducing maintenance, keeping out drafts and adding value to your home.  Whether you are looking for French doors, gliding or sliding patio doors, our variety of products are the long-lasting choice for any home.
